5 Ways to Brighten a Dark Room

With these easy tips and tactics, learn how to brighten any dark space and make it appear brighter.

It’s likely that if you live in an older home, at least one room is darker than you would like or simply the room itseld facing north. You may be wondering if there are any quick fixes that won’t require extensive remodeling to make a gloomy room appear brighter. Here are some tips you might attempt if you’re seeking for a way to lighten up that gloomy, dungeon-like space.

#1 Natural light

Making the most of any available natural light is one of the simplest and quickest methods to brighten a dim space. Due to the amount of windows in the house, the size of the room, and the windows themselves, this might be simpler in certain homes than others.

The steps you can take to increase natural light, though, are the same whether your windows are big or little. The first thing you should do is inspect any trees that are close to the room’s windows to make sure that no limbs are in the way of light entering through the window. To allow more light to enter the windows, you might need to cut back some branches.

The second thing you can do is pick the appropriate window coverings, such semi-transparent curtains, to let more light in.

#2 Choosing the right colors for your walls

While you don’t have to paint the entire area white, keeping the walls light will also brighten the space up instead of choosing those deep, dark colors. The overall décor of the space can be made lighter by selecting light hues like a light blue, green, or yellow.

Painting the trim around the door and windows a vivid color will add some color if you want to go with a space with white walls. When painting your walls a light hue, choose for a flat or semi-gloss paint rather than a high gloss paint because the latter might actually make the space feel darker rather than brighter.

Painting the ceiling white with high gloss paint would also assist to brighten a dim space. White wall paint will bounce light back into the space. Also, it creates a general airy impression in the space.

#3 Brighten a room with mirrors

You can also help to brighten a dark room by placing a mirror directly across from your window so that the light that enters the room is reflected back into the room in effect providing light almost as though there is an additional window. You can place one large mirror over a stand or a sofa, or choose to use a large piece of mirrored wall art that will reflect the light.

#4 Play with decor

My preferred method of adding color to a space is decor; it can be so much fun to decorate, especially when you have a specific goal in mind. An area can feel lighter by adding neutral decor.

To find timeless products, try looking for traditional designs. They won’t have to be changed every season if done this manner. Also, this maximizes the use of your decorating budget.

Consider unconventional combinations of decor objects with various textures. This tactic increases the visual appeal. The classic materials white porcelain and clear glass are simple ways to add light to a dim space. In the end, decorating is a means to show off YOUR personal flair, so have fun with it! Think of rugs, pillows, walldecor..every decor item can add an extra lift. But be aware not to overcrowd either if you have a smaller space, it will have opposite effect.

#5 Lamps, lamps, lamps!

If you have a room with limited natural light, adding a lamp (or two!) can sometimes give you just enough extra light to make all the difference.

Sconces, table lamps, and floor lamps can all be used to provide all-encompassing lighting in your space. If the light from floor and table lamps ishes the wall upward, the space will be more adequately lit.

Wall sconces and lamps that have two or four lighting options are available to wash the walls in light from above or from below as well as from side to side.

Needless to say this last point is my favourite one: I highly recommend stained glass lamps! You can match the color, the design and the opacity of the Tiffany-lamp to your space and create an astonishing mood. These are my top 5 suggestions for bringing light to any room. Which concept are you most eager to test in your dimly lit room, let me know!
